Our Community

The Honors Program creates a vibrant, tight-knit 鈥渃ommunity within a community鈥 at 麻豆视频.

Bonds of friendship and teamwork are formed as early as 鈥淧re-Frosh鈥 Summer Research and first-year student orientation, when newly arrived Honors students escape for two days to Camp Oswegatchie in the Adirondack Park to conquer the high ropes course and gobble a few too many s鈥檓ores. Throughout their four years, Honors students discover endless ways to connect, collaborate and create memories together.

Ben & Jerry's鈩 Nights

Ben & Jerry's鈩 Nights are a beloved Honors community tradition. These planned social gatherings give students an opportunity to take a break, connect with friends, and enjoy a favorite flavor of Ben & Jerry鈥檚鈩 ice cream. These occasions honor the legacy of the Honors Program鈥檚 first gift, made by the late 麻豆视频 custodian Shirley Nelson. Shirley hoped her gift would provide students with opportunities to relax and enjoy themselves amid the demands of college life. She especially admired people, including students, who work hard, strive for excellence, and understand the importance of taking time to recharge.

Little Things Matter

Sometimes, it is the small details that make the Honors community feel like home. A bowl of candy in the Honors Program office may seem simple, but it helps create a welcoming space where students can stop by, connect, and feel part of something larger. Throughout the year, Honors students also have opportunities to build friendships and celebrate their shared experiences through a variety of social events, including the Honors Welcome Dinner and the Commencement Brunch.

Nicolena Fazio

"Joining Honors instantly made 麻豆视频 feel like home. Moving in a few days early for orientation meant less chaos and more time to meet people, which was huge since it was my first time away from family. Starting college with that smaller orientation made a big difference. Living in the Honors community gave me study buddies and late-night ice cream partners鈥攎any are still my best friends three years later! That support system shaped my academic success. Over the years, Honors has given me mentors, leadership opportunities, and the confidence to land my first internship as a freshman. I鈥檒l always be grateful!"

Housing and Orientation

Housing

Incoming first-year Honors students can indicate interest in living in the Honors Program Living Learning Community (LLC)! This opportunity is optional and is part of a larger effort to create an academically focused learning community. Honors has reserved living space and incoming first-year students must indicate their interest in being placed in Honors housing when they complete their University Housing Questionnaire in PeopleSoft.

We are usually able to accommodate most first-year students who are interested in Honors housing, but please note that Honors housing for incoming first-year students is not guaranteed and students will be placed on a space-available basis, according to the date that the incoming first-year student formally accepts (in writing) their invitation to join the Honors Program.

First-Year Orientation

We welcome first-year students for move-in earlier in August than non-Honors students, with special required Orientation activities designed to introduce you to the Honors Program community and to begin a four year program of personal growth and development. The highlight of Orientation for first-year Honors students is a trip to Camp Oswegatchie in the beautiful lakeside setting in the Adirondacks. Activities include professionally-led low-ropes and high-ropes courses, which challenge the individual and build teamwork skills.

Additional information about Honors Orientation will be sent to students throughout the summer.

Honors Program Steering Board

Serving in the Honors Program student government provides students with the opportunity to lead activities and initiatives and to influence the future direction of the Honors Program. It also provides an essential vehicle to address grievances and concerns regarding the Program and its activities. The Honors Program Steering Board provides direction and guidance to committees and acts as the liaison between Honors students, the Honors Program office, and the Honors Council. Please refer to the The Steering Board鈥檚 own website for a full roster of representatives.
